The International House At Jacksonville State University
What is Diversity? Diversity is the existence of a variety of cultural or ethnic groups within a society. A great example of diversity is the International House at Jacksonville State University. Where 23 different nationalities, including the United States, live in a house and share day to day experiences and exchange cultures. Living at the international house is a great experience to mature and learn about the world. Diversity is a really strong word, it can be scary at first to experience it, but it actually fills you up with more knowledge than anyone. A person that has experienced diversity in any way has more chances to grow big and succeed in life. This is the people that think outside the box. On the surface, many may think cultural diversity in the workplace is pretty self explanatory. However, if you go a little deeper you will find that diversity in the workplace not only consists of culture, but also race, religion, communication, background, and demographics all which play an important role in what configures the differences within a workplace. Understanding the root of why people act a certain way, have a specific dress code, or how they approach conflict may possibly be the difference between an innovative, productive work environment and an inefficient, non productive work environment. Itââ¬â¢s important that those in the workplace try their best to get along and not pass judgment on those who seem different from first glance. Ensuring cultural understanding makes sure that entire chain of command operates smoothly to allow the business to perform at ma ximum potential. Diversity in the workforce is increasing quickly. To better serve an organization, and manage a team itââ¬â¢s most respecting of others to understand the values of different cultures. As a manager, valuing culture will ensure your team is part of a healthy work environment. This will in turn make employees want to take a positive step to reaching

The Elimination of the Designated Hitter in Baseball Essay
The Elimination of the Designated Hitter in Baseball Baseball is a simple game. You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball. At least it used to be that way until Ron Blomberg became the major leagues first designated hitter in 1973. Now, for a DH, baseball has become even simpler: You eat some cheese fries. You hit the ball. You eat some more cheese fries. Fortunately, this less-than-strenuous regimen might not last much longer. Baseball team owners have notified the players union of the possibility the DH will not exist in 1999. The DH is a part of playing rules, and owners said they can therefore phase it out without first receiving approval from the players union. Bad news for players, but good news forâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Worst of all, the DH singlehandedly creates Hall of Famers. Of the players who have reached 3,000 career hits during this decade, only Robin Yount did so minus the aid of the DH rule. Neither Dave Winfield, Paul Molitor nor George Brett would have achieved that milestone were their careers dependent upon their ability to play defense. Spectacular careers notwithstanding, these players lifetime stats should be accompanied by asterisks the size of baseballs when compared with those of their Cooperstown contemporaries. Such a move by the owners would be good for baseball on even more fronts. The American Leagues big-thunder offensive philosophy has left the junior circuit totally devoid of the strategy that all big-league managers used to invoke. In the National League, managers play for the run. If the lead-off hitter gets on base, the No. 2 man bunts him into scoring position. An NL team can send half its lineup to the plate and see a total of only six pitches from the opposition. When was the last time you saw Roberto Alomar or Alex Rodriguez bunt? With their brand of smash-mouth baseball, AL teams play for the six-run inning. A typical lineup card might feature one hitter who doesnt bring the house on every swing. As a result, ERAs are higher, and games progress more slowly. Sure, AL games are longer, too, butShow MoreRelatedThe Importance of Fighting in Hockey1444 Words à |à 6 PagesEvery sport has its own unique signature that separates it from the rest of the sports world. Lord of the flies reflection Essay Example For Students
Lord of the flies reflection Essay Compare and Contrast Essay : Lord of the FliesLord of the Flies demonstrates a very subtle yet important message, mostly about the way that humans can turn almost any situation into an evil one. The novel is fully based on attempting to understand this message. Unfortunately the movie for various reasons does not do the novel justice in the plot and detail department. The novel is chock full of details and mind indulging plot twists. But the movie not only leaves these out but it also forgets to include or changed essential fragments of the story. One of these elements was the nationality of the boys who are stranded on the island. In the novel the boys are British yet in the movie they are American. This not only affected appearance such as clothing and accents, but also the way that the boys acted reflected the different cultures that they had grown up in and was different in each version. An example of this if how they thought of the army, in the novel they mentioned links to world war 2, yet in the movie they only spoke of the army as someone who would save them and war was never really mentioned. Also a different change from the novel to the movie was the time setting between the two. In the novel the estimated time was the 1940s, and the boys reflected this by starting off on the island as good school children that had respect for their elders, etc. In the movie the time frame was anywhere from the late 80s to the early 90s, it was somewhat hard to define an exact date. The time setting showed in the technology that was present at the time such as helicopters. Also in the movie the boys started off on the island as boys who are going to military school and were partially desensitized to violence, possibly from the television and media of the 80s and 90s which is a great leap from the 40s. This quite possibly might have made a difference in how the children reacted to Jack and all of his rebellious ideas. One other difference between the two stories is the main source of conversation and fears that drove the boys into their mindsets. In the novel the beast was constantly mentioned and drove the idea of a deadly monster roaming loose among them. This greatly affected the way the boys reacted to anything that would get their mind off being eaten by the beast. Such as hunting with Jack, playing a sort of reverse physiology on themselves by hunting instead of being hunted, this made them feel more secure in my opinion. In the movie the beast is simply the pilot who stayed alive on the island and doesnt put fear into their hearts for very long, it just doesnt have quite the same effect as the novels beast did. When it comes down to the knitty gritty, I would definitely choose the novel over the movie if it came down to which was more interesting, but thats what happens when you have to stick 200 pages in an not much more than a hour.

Julius Caesar Was A Strong Leader For The Romans Who Changed Essays
Julius Caesar was a strong leader for the Romans who changed the course of the history of the Greco - Roman world decisively and irreversibly. With his courage and strength he created a strong empire. What happened during his early political career? How did he become such a strong dictator of the Roman Empire? What events led up to the making of the first triumvirate? How did he rise over the other two in the triumvirate and why did he choose to take over? What happened during his reign as dictator of Rome? What events led up to the assassination of Caesar? What happened after he was killed? Caesar was a major part of the Roman Empire because of his strength and his strong war strategies. Julius Caesar was a Roman general and statesman whose dictatorship was pivotal in Romes transition from republic to empire. When he was young Caesar lived through one of the most horrifying decades in the history of the city of Rome. The city was assaulted twice and captured by Roman armies, first in 87 BC by the leaders of the populares, his uncle Marius and Cinna. Cinna was killed the year that Caesar had married Cinnas daughter Cornelia. The second attack upon the city was carried our by Marius enemy Sulla, leader of the optimates, in 82 BC on the latters return from the East. On each occasion the massacre of political opponents was followed by the confiscation of their property. The proscriptions of Sulla, which preceded the reactionary political legislation enacted during his dictatorship left a particularly bitter memory that long survived. Caesar left Rome for the province of Asia on the condition that he divorce his wife because Sulla would only allow him to leave on that condition. When he heard the news that Sulla had been killed he returned to Rome. He studied rhetoric under the distinguished teacher Molon. In the winter of 75-74 BC Caesar was captured by pirated and, while in their custody awaiting the arrival of the ransom money which they demanded, threatened them with crucifixion , a threat which he fulfilled immediately after his release. He then returned to Rome to engage in a normal political career, starting with the quaetorship which he served in 69-68 BC in the province of Further Spain. In the Roman political world of the sixties the dominance of the optimates was challenged by Pompey and Crassus. The optimates, led by Quintus Lutatius Catulus and Lucius Licinius Lucullus , were chiefly men whose careers had been made by Sulla. Pompey and Crassus were consuls in 70 BC and had rescinded the most offensively reactionary measures of Sullas legislation. During Pompeys absence from 67 to 62 BC during his campaigns against the Mediterranean pirates, Mithridates, and Crassus, his jealous rival. Caesar married Ponpeia after Cornelias death and was appointed aedile in 65 BC As aedile, Caesar returned to Marius trophies to their former place of honor in the Capitol, thus laying claim to leadership of the populares. When Caesar was a praetor, he supported a tribune who wanted Pompey recalled to restore order in Rome. As a result, Caesar was suspended from office for a period and antagonized Catulus. Before leaving Rome to govern Further Spain for a year, Caesar divorced his wife Pompeia because of the allegation that she had been implicated in the offense of Publius Clodius. The latter was then awaiting trial for breaking into Caesars house the previous December disguised as a woman at the festival of the Bona Dea, which no man is allowed to attend. After his return from a successful year administrating Spain Caesar was elected consul for 59 BC through political alliance with Pompey and Crassus . This alliance was called the first triumvirate. Caesars purpose was to gain a big military command. Pompey for his part sought the ratification of his Eastern settlement and land allotments for his discharged troops. Crassus sought a revision of the contract for collecting taxes in the province of Asia. An agrarian bill authorizing the purchase of land for Pompeys veterans was passed in January of 59 BC at a disorderly public assembly which Caesars fellow consul Calpurnius Bibulus, was thrown from the platform and his consular insignia were broken. Bibulus tried to stop Caesar and his supporters from passing any further law but was only able to postpone the creation of the new laws by saying that the skies would not permit it because there was stormy weather and they were very superstitious. Caesar disregarded Bibulus behavior and the remainder of the legislative program of the triumvirate was carried through. As a
